AWARE Colorado Update • August 2006

AWARE Colorado continues to visit communities around the state to inform local officials and others about tools and strategies to protect water quality. To learn more about the AWARE Colorado program or schedule a presentation click here.

Here are some new resources and upcoming events.

• NEWS FROM AWARE

AWARE is joining the Big Thompson Watershed Forum to develop a pilot program that brings information about the impacts of land use on water quality, and successful strategies for protecting water resources, to watersheds statewide. The project will explore how AWARE can work with local watershed groups to bring watershed-specific information to local officials.

With a recent grant from Coors Brewing Company, AWARE will send a copy of the Watershed Protection Toolkit for Local Officials to every county and municipality in the state.

In the past 18 months, AWARE has made presentations to over 240 land use decision makers, planners, engineers and interested residents in more than 15 communities throughout the state.

Northern Mountain and Prairie Community Tree Guide: Benefits, Costs and Strategic Planting

This guide quantifies the benefits and costs for typical trees in urban and community settings. The guide concludes that environmental benefits, such as stormwater runoff reduction, air pollutant uptake and energy savings, were two to four times greater than tree care costs for medium and large trees.

The guide can be downloaded at www.fs.fed.us/psw/programs/cufr/products/cufr_258.pdf.

Porous Pavements (Integrative Studies in Water Management and Land Development Series, Volume 5)

This book, by University of Georgia professor Bruce K. Ferguson, discusses the use of various types of porous paving materials in a number of site-specific applications.

The book retails for $159.95 and is available from the publisher, CRC Press (www.crcpress.com; type “porous pavements” into the site’s search window).

Promoting Stormwater Infiltration with Mountain Construction and Post Construction BMPs

This paper illustrates how a series of stormwater infiltration structures can help retain water in the watershed, reduce erosion and create a more environmentally and financially sustainable site.

Waterways at Risk: How Low-Impact Development Can Reduce Runoff Pollution in Michigan

This new study by American Rivers and the Public Interest Research Group in Michigan discusses the effects of urban sprawl on the state’s water resources and suggests policies for addressing growth-related water quality impacts.
