AWARE Colorado continues to visit communities around the state to inform local officials and others about tools and strategies to protect water quality. To learn more about the AWARE Colorado program or schedule a presentation click here. Here are some new resources, upcoming events and a related article about preventing polluted runoff. • NEW RESOURCES National Management Measures to Control Nonpoint Source Pollution from Urban Areas This document helps citizens and local governments in urban areas protect water resources from polluted runoff that can result from everyday activities and urban development. It includes voluntary guidance on 12 management measures designed to prevent and control runoff pollutants from urban and suburban lands. It is free and available online at www.epa.gov/nps/urbanmm. Hard copies are available by phone at 800-490-9198 or online at http://www.epa.gov/ncepihom. Request publication #EPA 841-B-05-004.National Management Measures to Protect and Restore Wetlands and Riparian Areas for the Abatement of Nonpoint Source Pollution This new guidance describes how to reduce nonpoint source pollution through the protection and restoration of wetlands and riparian areas, including implementation of vegetated treatment systems. To download the document, logon www.epa.gov/nps/wetmeasures. Hardcopies can be ordered by phone at 800-490-9198 or online at http://www.epa.gov/ncepihom. Specifying publication #EPA 841-B-05-003. Parking Spaces / Community Places: Finding the Balance Through Smart Growth SolutionsThe approaches described in this report can help communities explore new, flexible parking policies that can encourage growth and balance parking needs with their other goals. The EPA developed this guide for local government officials, planners, and developers. For more information or to download the document, visit http://www.epa.gov/dced/parking.htm. Hard copies are available by sending an e-mail to ncepimal@one.net or by calling 800-490-9198. Request EPA publication #EPA 231-K-06-001. Protecting Water Resources with Higher-Density Development This new EPA document reports on a study that explored the effects of development density on stormwater runoff. The study concluded that low-density development may not always be the preferred strategy for protecting water resources. Higher densities may better protect water qualityespecially at the lot and watershed levels. For more information or to download the document, logon www.epa.gov/livability/water_density.htm. For hard copies can be ordered by phone at 800-490-9198 or online at http://www.epa.gov/ncepihom. Request EPA publication 231-R-06-001. The Conservation Easement Handbook Newly revised and expanded by the Land Trust Alliance and Trust for Public Land, this document addresses land conservation to meet local needs. It contains information about developing and managing a conservation easement program. For more information logon www.tpl.org/tier3_cd.cfm?content_item_id=19577&folder_id=175. Using Smart Growth Techniques as Stormwater Best Management Practices The goal of this document is to help communities that have adopted smart growth policies and plans recognize the water benefits of those smart growth techniques and suggest ways to integrate those policies into stormwater planning and compliance. For more information logon www.epa.gov/livability/stormwater.htm. Hardcopies can be ordered by phone at 800-490-9198 or online at http://www.epa.gov/ncepihom. Specifying EPA publication 231-B-05-002. • UPCOMING EVENTS StormCon, The North American Surface Water Quality Conference and Exposition StormCon is the nation's largest stormwater pollution prevention conference with over 160 presenters from 30 states and several countries addressing proven techniques for solving community and construction-site stormwater pollution problems. Learn from one of four featured program tracks: Best Management Practices (BMPs), Research and Testing of Best Management Practices, Managing the Stormwater Program, and Comprehensive Water Quality Management. New and expanded program areas include regional BMPs, low-impact development techniques, construction-site runoff, U.S. EPA workshops and panel discussions.
